Apple pie with charisma. And expensive psych bills.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Apple Flip. It sounds like a cell phone. But tastes a lot better. Whew.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Publix has a grab-and-go “Sweet Treats” case in Bakery where you can buy just ONE pastry. If you’ve seen their Bakery prices lately, then you know<\/em> why this is appealing. There are options as low as $1.19, and you can mix and match to your heart’s content.<\/p>\n\n\n

“The Case” was looking mighty sparse at my visit. My options included several donut varieties, a few puff-style pastries, and a couple cookies. There are no tongs to grab these puppies, so I used the pink tissue paper. You just slide your prize into a paper bag (with window), and let the cashier sort it out.<\/p>\n\n\n

Textures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I think the textures of the Apple Flip are the best features. Sticky, crunchy, soft, and gooey. It’s a whole sensory experience. It’s like a more complicated apple pie. Apple pie with charisma. And perhaps expensive psych bills.<\/p>\n\n\n

The crustage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This crescent-shaped turnover is huge, but flat. It has a pleasantly bubbly, flakey crust. I like how the pastry is soft in the center, and chewy-crisp on the edges. The top is heavily coated with a crunchy sugar mixture. Behold:<\/p>\n\n\n

Apple filling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The apple filling is a gooey, thick mixture. It has small, soft cubes of chopped apple pieces. It’s cooked down so much, it reminds me of marmalade. Almost caramelized. Yet apple flavored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, this filling doesn’t taste like anything homemade. It gives “canned” vibes. Slightly processed taste. Less fruity than a slice of apple pie. Still, it’s definitely<\/em> nicer than gas station fodder.<\/p>\n\n\n

Flavors and sweetness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The flavors are slightly tangy, with enough cinnamon to turn it a rich brown color. In fact, you could almost call this a “cinnamon pastry.” Spicy-sweet cinnamon! I enjoyed it. It’s a waaaay different experience than the Publix Apple Pie<\/a>, which had almost NO spice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Sadly, it doesn’t taste like nutmeg. For that, you’ll need a Costco Apple Pie<\/a>. Here’s my review.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was bracing myself for a sugar overload, but the Apple Flip has a moderate sweetness. Combined with the vast planet of pastry dough, it evens out to “just right.” The touch of salt brings everything together.<\/p>\n\n\n

It’s mildly offensive to see the calories right in front of me like this. Can’t even pretend ignorance. Hmmph!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

There’s a syrupy ooze on the bottom of the pastry, from the escaped filling. It’s sticky. Verrrry sticky. But in a fun kind of way. I had to clean my face and hands like a toddler after scarfing it down. No ragrets. Not even a single letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serving the Apple Flip<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Could you serve this for breakfast? Sure, Janet. You’re an adult. You can do whatever you want. You could also eat it for dessert. You could warm it up, cut it in half, and serve two<\/em> people, with some ice cream on top. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, honestly, it has more snack vibes. Something about the flat, hand-held quality. It’s a sneaky afternoon treat, if I ever saw one. And no, I’m not<\/em> gonna share.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ingredients & Nutrition Facts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Publix doesn’t print the ingredients or nutrition facts on the label. I emailed them to request this information. Aaaaand, I never received a reply. Booooo! The only nutritional information available at “The Case” is the calorie count, which is 530.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Price and Servings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The single pastry costs $2.49 at my local Publix. Given the size (and the fact that I don’t have to buy a whole package of them), I consider this a fair<\/em> price.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Friends of the Apple Flip<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Apple Flip was almost<\/em> the most expensive pastry in “The Case.” The only item more spendy was the “Jumbo Chocolate Chip Cookie” for a brutal $3.99. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tangent: I almost<\/em> bought this Chocolate Almond Bretzel (also $2.49). I may have to return, just to get him. I mean, look at him. He wants to come home with me:<\/p>\n\n\n

In conclusion, the Publix Apple Flip isn’t exactly a gourmet<\/em> treat. But it is<\/em> tasty and satisfying. Great cinnamon flavor. Fun textures. As long as your expectations are in order, you’ll probably enjoy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the price and convenience, the Awesome-o-Meter rates this a “Yaaas.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
