Behold, my stuff<\/em>. Food needs a classy vehicle, you know.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At the risk of sounding like a smarmy influencer: I bought some stuff<\/em>. House-stuff<\/em>. Table-stuff<\/em>. Hosting-stuff<\/em>. Fall-themed holiday decor-stuff<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s all bargain-stuff<\/em>, because I’m poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I’m going to show it to you. And what I did with it. *taps everything with fingernails*<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

Leaf-shaped Dinner Plates from Wal-Mart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These leaf-shaped plates<\/a> are supposed to be serving platters. But they’re the right size for a generous dinner plate. So I bought 10. I was very impressed by the quality — they’re thick and heavy stoneware, with a glossy-smooth glaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I love that the design is both<\/em> “raised” and “embossed.” The artist in me is thrilled<\/em> by the asymmetrical leaves — they’re not the same contour on both sides, which makes them look classier. Less cookie-cutter, more bespoke. Wal-Mart, give your designer a raise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These plates are also slightly bowl-shaped, with gently sloped sides. They’re a true ivory color. This is a much more sophisticated product than I expected for the price: $9.50 each. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I played around with different plate orientations: vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. I opted for the diagonal presentation. It’s dynamic, but still fits compactly on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would make them better? Selling them in a box of 6, so I could store them easily afterwards. White (instead of ivory) would match my existing dishes better. Happily, these are dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe. Hurrah. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Burgundy Glassware from Target<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The short fellows are supposed to be wine glasses<\/a>, but I’m using them as water goblets. Sue me. I bought the matching coup glasses<\/a>, because everyone needs a fren!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Dark<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I was not thrilled by the quality here. The glass is terrifyingly thin and appears to have a coating added for the color. The burgundy is slightly mottled with some small, raised defects. If I’d handled them in the store, I probably wouldn’t have purchased. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They look gorgeous on my table, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While I love the general<\/em> shape of the coup glasses, they are obnoxiously large. It feels like drinking out of a bowl. If I’d<\/em> been in charge, I would have made the “water goblets” bigger<\/em>, and the coup glasses smaller<\/em>. Hmmph!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With my Target card discount, these glasses were $4.75 each. Sadly, they are not<\/em> dishwasher safe, and only suitable for cold drinks. They don’t feel like the kind of product that is meant to last for years. In fact, three of mine arrived smashed into teeny fragments (more about that later).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

Pumpkin Cocotte Dishes from Wal-Mart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These pumpkin-shaped cocottes<\/a> were advertised as 8 ounces. Imagine my surprise when they showed up with more than twice<\/em> that capacity — mine hold more than 16 ounces. Who was in charge of this? I want names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Anyway. While they’re not<\/em> the size I expected, they’re very beautiful. They’re thick and glossy with neat-fitting lids. The top knobs are slightly slippery to lift, and I could do without the side handles. Of the 12 pumpkins I bought, one<\/em> had a lid that was warped and didn’t quite sit right in the opening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like the leaf plates, these pumpkins are sturdy stoneware and a true ivory color (also available in green). They’re dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe. While you can buy them individually for $5.97<\/a>, my “pro-tip” is to buy the set of three for $17.92<\/a>. You don’t save any money, but you get them delivered in a long, narrow storage box with tidy compartments. If you know, you know. Those boxes are lifesavers for seasonal stuff.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pheasant Place-Card Holders from Target<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My heart went pitter-pat when I saw these pheasant-shaped place-card holders<\/a>. I love critters on my table. Pheasants are more fun than turkeys. (Don’t cancel me.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Two<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, these were not the quality I had hoped for. The card slot has egregious glaze\/ceramic defects that prevent the card from sliding completely inside. That’s unacceptable. “You had one job!” There are places where the glossy glaze is missing, and there is just rough underglaze sticking out. There are also small chips in the color. Why, Target? Why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They’re a bit more crudely decorated (and lighter weight) than I expected for the price: $15\/set of 4. I bought three sets of 4, so I know I’m not looking at a random fluke — this is consistent failure in the quality control department. Boo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the upside, Target also had matching pheasant salt & pepper shakers, napkin rings, and even plates available. On the downside, the stuff I wanted sold out almost immediately. If I could go back in time, I would have purchased these<\/em> gold quail card holders from QVC<\/a> instead. Alas.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Turkey Salt & Pepper Shakers from Michael’s Crafts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of critters on the table, since I couldn’t<\/em> get the pheasant salt & pepper shakers, I bought these adorable turkeys from Michael’s<\/a> instead. They were an eye-popping bargain at $2.69\/set of 2. Yes, you read that right. Less than 3 bucks, my dudes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They’re sturdy ceramic with a pleasantly variegated brown glaze. It’s smooth and glossy, but shows the feather details nicely. They have simple silicone plugs on the bottom for easy filling. While these aren’t as colorful as Target’s pheasants, the neutral palette is easier to incorporate into future tablescapes. I bought three sets. But I wish I’d bought four<\/em>. Because I’m greedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would make them better? Changing the turkey design slightly so you get two different birds would make this a more memorable set (and easier to select the right one at dinner!). One of my turkey tails had a chip in it. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Acorn Leaf Server from Wal-Mart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Wal-Mart is kind of the dark horse in this race. They’re generally not what I associate with high-style or high-quality. But, I grudgingly<\/em> admit I liked everything I bought from them this year. I am especially impressed with this little four-compartment serving dish<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The bowls are leaf-shaped, with small acorns near the finger-loop. It’s easy to grab and move around. The color matches the leaf plates, so these feel like a “set.” This is perfect for serving nuts, crackers, and candies. It’s the kind of thing I would set out on my coffee table before dinner. But also a nice caddy for sugar cubes, tea bags, and lemon slices at a tea party. I would use this year-round, acorns be darned!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I liked it so much, I ordered a second one. It’s not especially cheap at $11, but it feels like the kind of quality that will outlast my grandchildren. If I had<\/em> grandchildren. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Metal Leaf Tray from Michael’s Crafts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While I was snapping up all the cheap little turkeys, I found these metal leaf trays<\/a> at Michael’s. I was impressed by the details — you can see so much texture, it almost feels preternatural<\/em>. The veining is exquisite. And the brown staining is beautifully transparent to give it a richer, more nuanced look. These are so gorgeous, you could hang them on your wall as art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Since they are aluminum, they’re very lightweight. But not thin. There are small foam pads on the bottom to protect your furniture. This is more of a display item than something I’d put food directly on. I plan to line mine with parchment paper for serving bread. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Close<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I got mine on sale for a measly $15.99. The trays are 18 inches long, which is fairly generous. But, I’d honestly love an even larger version, maybe something that could actually be used to serve after-dinner coffee — with room for cups, saucers, sugar, and cream. Hey, I can dream!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Pumpkin Baking Dishes from Target<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I’ve been looking at pumpkin-shaped bakeware for a few years, and this is the first time I felt a surge of excitement over the design. Target’s version has more elegant details than any other models I’ve seen — the twisted vine handles and looped lid is absolutely<\/em> stunning. (Also, that lid-loop is SO MUCH easier to grab than most “stems.” Trust me. You don’t wanna slip when you’re lifting a hot, heavy casserole lid. This is great design.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also appreciate that these pumpkins are a beige stoneware claybody with ivory glaze, as this creates subtle variations in the crevices. This is nicer than the Wal-Mart clear glaze, which looks flat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I bought two different sizes: a 112 ounce casserole dish<\/a> ($20), and a 28 ounce baker <\/a>($10). I liked these so much, I ordered two large ones and three smaller ones (read below for why I only have TWO pumpkins total.) Ironically, the 28 ounce pumpkin isn’t much larger than the “8 ounce” Wal-Mart pumpkins. Ha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The downside is that the lid of the large pumpkin doesn’t fit as flush in the opening as I’d prefer. It appears to be slightly warped and wobbles. It’s not a huge issue, but it dampened my enthusiasm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BUT, Target’s shipping and replacement procedures suck<\/em>!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What truly quenched my joy was receiving three smashed pumpkins from Target. THREE. Smashed to smithereens, due to shockingly<\/em> poor packaging. But what added insult to injury was how difficult the replacement process was. Target required me to send the broken pieces back — warning me that if any were missing, I would not be refunded. This was a dangerous job, as the pieces were razor sharp. I got a shard in my finger. I had to pack them in a new box, print a label, tape it all up, and drive it to a FedEx drop off. When I got there, the package wouldn’t fit in the drop box. Ugh. I had to go back home, find a smaller box, and repeat the perilous process again. I got shards all over my garage floor, trying to pour the contents from one box to another. You’d think it couldn’t get any worse, but it does: days later, I am still waiting for my return to be approved and my new items to ship. I still don’t have my stuff <\/em>(or a refund!), and I needed them for my table set-up. Target, you’ve really<\/em> let me down! Do better.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Twist-shaped Taper Candles from Wal-Mart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These twist-shaped candles<\/a> were 96 cents. Need I say more?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The twist shape is nicely done — it’s smooth and cleanly molded. It looks expensive. This is scentless wax, which I prefer. The burgundy color is pleasant, though not quite<\/em> as dark or rich as I’d hoped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I bought 9 candles, but two of them arrived snapped in half. Sadness. I was surprised that the color options don’t include white or ivory, and the green shade was an offensive garish hue that I personally wouldn’t buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I lit one of the broken candles to see how well they burn. Pretty good. Not uneven or wantonly rapid. I would buy these again.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Gold Candlesticks from Wal-Mart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I wanted<\/em> a snazzy candelabra, but I needed<\/em> something narrow that I could slip between dishes on my table. So I opted for this set of 9 goldtone candlesticks<\/a> from Wal-Mart. They come in three metal pieces that you screw together, and then stick an adhesive foam pad on the bottom. It’s pretty quick and easy. About 20 minutes total. If<\/em> your ADHD doesn’t kick in. Ahem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I like how they look. But they’re very lightweight. Since no-one wants a flaming housefire on Thanksgiving, I’d recommend securing them to the table with museum wax<\/a>. Or a sneaky loop of duct tape. Or something. You know. Look, I warned you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The candlesticks are three different<\/em> heights. You get three of each<\/em> height. The whole set cost $18.99.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Acorn Votives from Michael’s Crafts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I was pleasantly surprised by the detailing on these little acorn-shaped votive candles<\/a> from Michael’s. They have painted areas that give dimension to the molded details. They look more expensive than they are: $4.99 for 3 candles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I opted to use mine on this wood candle stand my sister handmade for me. They fit perfectly, and even match the wood colors. Adorbs.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Gold Flatware from Wal-Mart<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No one is going to mistake this gold silverware as a truly expensive flatware set. But it doesn’t feel obnoxiously “bargain” either. The utensils strike a good balance of weight, and they’re curved, instead of stamped flat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

What motivated me to pick this<\/em> set is the inclusion of steak knives. These boys are sharp<\/em>! And while they’re lightweight, they look and feel pretty good for the money. I also like that this set comes with two<\/em> spoon sizes. Although, the “soup spoon” is annoying large — almost a serving spoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Some of the flatware ends were not polished as smoothly as I would like, but nothing dangerous. The gold finish on mine was even, with no flaws. But it’s a “mirror finish,” so they do<\/em> pick up tons<\/em> of finger prints and smudges. Be prepared to lightly “polish” yours after setting the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boxed service for 8 costs $30<\/a>. It’s a set of 49. It came with ONE derpy metal drinking straw. Whyyyy? What is that for?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Layered Leaf Tureen from Target<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ok, I saved the best for last. And, this stoneware Layered Leaf Tureen<\/a> was so<\/em> fabulous, I almost <\/em>forgave Target for all their other shenanigans. (But not quite. I am still mad.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It’s a huge dish, almost a small punch-bowl, with an elegant fluted shape. Like Target’s pumpkins, the lid handle is a suave loop. Very easy to grab and lift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the leaf pattern really steals the show: a circular, rhythmic pattern of overlapping green. It’s active, without interrupting the unity of the dish shape. The 3D leaf tips pop out over the edges of the bowl rim, making this look like a $100 dish instead of a $18 dish (yes, I paid $17.81 with my Target card! I am shook.) The glaze is a gorgeous semi-translucent green, with delicate spots of russet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Best of all, this dish is versatile. Without the lid, it functions as a large bowl — partly due to the inner rim being glazed, instead of raw ceramic. I used mine for fruit. (But, serving punch is still on the horizon.) I personally think the green leaf motif is suitable for any<\/em> season. I’ll definitely be using mine year-round. This was a staggeringly good find. Buy one before they’re all gone. You’re welcome.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Bringing it all together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I used a simple 6-foot folding table with a 3×7 foot wooden interior door slab placed on top, covered with a thick white table cloth. I saw someone on the interwebs using a 4×8 foot piece of plywood on top of a folding table, and I’d totally do that if I could cram a plywood sheet in my car and drive it home! But I can’t. Alas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since I didn’t have a table runner, I collected some fresh wild grape vine from my backyard and tucked it between the dishware in a long shape down the center of the table. Pro-tip: if you want your grapevine to lie “flat” (like a table runner), collect it the day before. It will wilt just<\/em> enough to create a flat shape on your table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dramatic Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I think the winner this year was Wal-Mart. The products were almost flawless, priced competitively, and delivered faster (and with fewer issues\/easier resolution) than the other brands. Wal-Mart is making it hard to hate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Target has great-looking style. They always have. And some<\/em> of the products were excellent. But. Some were mega-disappointments. The shipping was slower, with massive<\/em> casualties, and aggravating replacement procedures. Shaking my head at you, Target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael’s surprised me, with affordable and elegant items. They shipped slower than Wal-Mart, but faster than Target. I will keep them in mind for future bargain hunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
