Is this the best chocolate bar I’ve tried from Aldi? Probably<\/s>. Most likely<\/s>. Yes.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very dark chocolate. Not demure. Or mindful.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is exceedingly dark chocolate. Blackout dark. Maybe the darkest<\/em> I’ve had in a candy bar. In fact, it tastes like bittersweet<\/em> chocolate \u2014 barely any sweetening at all. Almost as bitter as my soul. In my world, chocolate can never be too<\/em> dark. So, I adored this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s a thin, crisp layer of chocolate, with what tastes like teeny-tiny bits of crunchy cocoa beans. The ingredients call this “semi-sweet chocolate,” but c’mon! There are only 9 grams of sugar per bar, which is a miniscule amount for candy<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The zesty orange filling.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

However, with the sweet filling, the bitter chocolate doesn’t taste bitter at all. In fact, the syrupy orange stuff rounds this out to taste “just sweet enough.” I complain a lot about “too sweet” treats; this one is exactly<\/em> as sweet as I want it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The syrup is runnier than I expected, but in a nice way. It’s tangy, zingy, and has a strong<\/em> citrus brightness. It’s made with real orange juice and orange peel. I loved this fruity, tart flavor against the earthy chocolate notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Here’s another chocolate bar I raved about: Ferrero Rocher Dark Chocolate Crunchy Salted Caramel Hazelnut Bar<\/a>. It’s like a very sophisticated peanut butter cup. But without peanuts.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seductive mousse layer.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But wait, there’s more. The orange, jam-like syrup is sitting on top a bed of airy, whipped chocolate mousse. It’s delicate, and melts on the tongue. With the other layers, the mousse doesn’t have a noticeable separate taste, but it does contribute a soft, creamy juxtaposition. A lush texture interlude. A palate buffer. It’s like the bubble-wrap padding in your Fed Ex delivery. Except, much better-tasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snazzy packaging.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I like the sharp packaging here, too. You get five individually foil-wrapped mini bars inside an elegant cardboard portfolio. Did I just call this a portfolio? I did. I felt like a rich business executive, folding it open and surveying my options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mini bars are sub-divided as well. You get four segments per bar. This is important<\/em>, because the orange syrup is so oozy, it would run everywhere if it were not compartmentalized. So, 20 segments total. I love the tidiness of this. I like boundaries, even in my chocolate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
