Tony’s Chocolonely Easter Eggs Review

Author’s Note: Not a sponsored review. I have no affiliation with Tony’s Chocolonely, Walmart, Williams Sonoma, or Target.
Here’s what I think of these “Egg-stra Special” Assorted Chocolate Easter Eggs.
OK, story time. What I really wanted was this posh Peter Rabbit Easter Egg from Williams Sonoma. It’s filled with fancy-pants Beatrix Potter rabbit-themed treats and silly nonsense. But it costs $70. SEVENTY DOLLARS! And I’m poor. Alas, cruel world.

As Westley from The Princess Bride would say, “Get used to disappointment.”
So, I did what everyone in the singles dating pool is currently doing: I compromised. I bought this wee little carton of Egg-stra Special Assorted Chocolate Eggs from Tony’s Chocolonely instead. At less than $6, it was much more my speed. Or my wallet’s speed. Which is a turtle’s crawl right now.

These are solid eggs.
So, the sad news is, these eggs are all solid. For whatever reason, I thought they were filled eggs. Like, a soft filling of some kind. I was looking forward to biting them open and discovering that seductive texture change. But, no. Just solid blocks of chocolate.
Indeed, after the first eager bite betrayed my expectations, I had a little tantrum at my kitchen table — unwrapping one egg after another, and stabbing it open with a paring knife, feeling the inevitable gloom of twice-baked chocolatey disappointment wash over me.
I was like an enraged, chocolate-loving Godzilla. Destroying the egg city, and littering the earth with empty foil wrappers in my wake.

Ok, not really that dramatic. But sort of. Because, I already didn’t get the coveted Peter Rabbit Easter Egg. And now this. Tsk! There is only so much food disappointment one cranky person can endure in 24 hours.
The flavor assortment
Anyway. The Toney’s Chocolonely package says there are five different flavors:
- Milk Chocolate
- Dark Chocolate
- Caramel Sea Salt
- Almond Sea Salt
- Hazelnut

I got a random number of each flavor, but there were no less than two of each. The most prominent flavor was Milk Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt (4 eggs). They are color coded by foil wrapper, and the label offers a handy cheat-sheet. In case you REALLY hate hazelnut, or something. You monster.

Chocolate quality
Now for the good news: this is really good chocolate. In fact, it’s so good, I don’t actually mind the lack of filling. IN FACT, I don’t even like milk chocolate. But I like THIS milk chocolate — it’s outstanding! This is true imported Belgian chocolate — with an extravagant creaminess and distinct flavor. If I had to guess, I’d say the silky mouth-feel is from the prominent use of cocoa butter in the ingredients. The dark chocolate is fantastically tangy and crisp, with a pleasant smoothness.

My favorite flavor is (surprise!) the Milk Chocolate Caramel Sea Salt. It’s got fun little crunchy bits of toffee, and a satisfying saltiness. My least favorite? Probably the Milk Chocolate Almond — there wasn’t enough almond to really contribute to the overall experience — too much “sameness” with the other egg tastes.
(Looking for another silly chocolate review? Here’s my take on Tony’s Chocolonely Pretzel Toffee Bar, which is a combination of dark and milk chocolate.)

Nutrition Facts in Assorted Easter Eggs from Tony’s Chocolonely
A serving size is 2 eggs and has 140 calories. You get 8 grams of fat and 2 grams of protein. There’s 12 grams of sugars (10 grams “added sugar”) and 1 lonely gram of fiber. Make it less lonely by eating 4 eggs.

Price and Servings
My mini-carton of 12 eggs cost about $6. Since there are 6 servings per container, each serving costs about 50 cents.
Shelf-Life
The package says to store in a “cool, dark and dry place, but not in the fridge.” The expiration date on my carton allowed approximately 6 months to consume.
Where to buy Tony’s Chocolonely Easter Eggs
If you’re wondering where I got these eggs, the answer is: Walmart. In fact, I ordered mine online. I very rarely shop at Walmart, but I gotta give them props for this: I ordered my Tony’s Chocolonely Egg-stra Special Eggs at 3:30pm, and they showed up on my doorstep at 9:30am the following morning. I’m not a Walmart Plus member or anything — and I didn’t pay for shipping. That’s wicked-fast and convenient. Color me impressed.
You can also get these at Target.
Dramatic Conclusion
While not the droids eggs I was searching for, these were tastier than I expected for solid Easter eggs, and especially delicious for milk chocolate eggs. Possibly the best milk chocolate I’ve had. Although the flavors are subtle, they are delicious and natural. The packaging makes these a fun, giftable novelty item.
And remember, the turtle-wallet wins before the rabbit in the end.
The End.
