Publix Chocolate Moose Tracks Ice Cream Review

Author’s note: These are my own weird little opinions and I have no affiliation with Publix! Hmmph!
Life isn’t fair.
There is nothing wrong with this ice cream. But. I bought it after trying the Publix Buckeyes & Fudge flavor. And there’s just no comparison. You can’t compete with that. Don’t even try.
So, following on the heels of such unbridled magnificence, this Chocolate Moose Tracks flavor is comparatively “ho-hum.” No, that isn’t fair. But neither is life.

What it is?
Anyway. This is a “Publix Premium” ice cream flavor, and it’s essentially a chocolate base with mix-ins of mini peanut butter cups and fudge ribbons.
What I appreciate about this ice cream is that it IS absolutely “rich and creamy.” No lies were told. It has just the right balance of airy lightness and buttery cream density. It’s also one of the flavors with a more modest sweetness. You won’t feel bullied by the sugar overlords.
(For another Publix flavor with a gentle sweetness, check out my review of the Santa’s White Christmas flavor.)

Weak chocolate flavor
I think my chief “complaint” with this ice cream is that it is supposed to be “chocolate peanut butter” flavor. But it is neither deeply chocolatey, nor richly peanuty. It’s awkwardly a little of both, without really satisfying either longing.
It also lacks the seductive saltiness of Publix’ Buckeyes & Fudge variation. (Sorry, I just cannot get over how good that was. It was absurdly good. I am a ruined woman now.)

Uneven mix-ins
And, my last two complaints: this Chocolate Moose Tracks variation had rather uneven distribution of the mini peanut butter cups: I found most of them at the bottom of my carton. And the chocolate texture is just a tad more grainy than I’d prefer.
It’s still yummy. And I ate it all. But I won’t be raving or recommending it. Shan’t. Can’t make me.

Mini Peanut Butter Cups
Once I found the mini peanut butter cups, they’re enjoyable. Not as nice as the buckeyes — these have more milk chocolate, and are more sugary than peanuty. But they’re still fun and tasty.
(Need something a little fancier? Here’s my review of these show-stopping Pistachio Gelato Bombs from Sprouts.)

Fudge ribbons
The fudge is similar to other Publix-brand flavors. Maybe even identical. It’s distributed in thin (but wide) ribbons, and has a soft, delicate texture. I liked the more concentrate dark chocolate flavor this fudge contributes.

A serving is 2/3 cup and contains 270 calories. You get 17 grams of fat (9 grams saturated fat) and 5 grams protein. There are 26 grams total carbohydrates, of which 21 grams are sugars (17 grams “added sugars”) and 2 grams are fiber. There’s just 3% your daily value sodium, and 13% your daily value cholesterol per serving. Plus, you get 8% each your daily value iron and calcium per serving.
Price and Servings
At my local Publix, a half-gallon of this ice cream costs about $6.59. But sometimes it goes on sale for $5. We live in hope. We do indeed.
Since there are 12 servings per carton, each serving would cost 55 cents at the regular price.
Shelf Life
The “best by” date on my carton allowed approximately 8 months to consume.
Dramatic Conclusion

If you’re standing inside Publix right now, trying to decide between these two peanut-butter-and-chocolate ice creams brothers: the Buckeyes & Fudge is the winner. This Chocolate Moose Tracks version is “nice,” but it’s blander and has less salty, nutty satisfaction.
The Awesome-o-Meter rates it a “Maybe.” Why can’t you be more like your brother?! Prepare for a lifetime of emotional damage, Chocolate Moose Tracks ice cream! :'(
The End.
