Costco Four Berry Pie Review

Obviously health food.

Ok, the internet made me do it. Here are my thoughts on Costco’s new Four Berry Pie:

This is a lovely pie. It has a rustic, homemade appearance. It’s the kind of thing I’d expect to find at a farmer’s market, not Costco. The crust is beautifully pierced in a pattern and baked to a bubbly warm brown color.

If you already love the crust of the Costco Apple Pie, this one is different, but still amazing. It’s crisper, sweeter, and more like a cookie. The outside has a crusty sugar coating, and the inside is flaky and softer. The crust is thick, but tender, and holds together decently during serving.

Enough about the crust. Geez.

I heard this pie was overly tart, but I disagree. It has a gentle sweetness, punctuated by an occasional tangy zing from the cranberry chunks. Honestly, there is SO much fruit in this pie, I am impressed. The first ingredient is strawberries. So, obviously health food! (You know who you are).

Some grocery store pies have more “fruit gel” than fruit — not this one! The fruits have integrity, and are definitely the stars of the show. The filling is more “fruity” than “sugary.” I loved the syrup — it’s surprisingly homemade tasting, not too gelatinous and not too runny. It’s rich, deeply flavorful, and so fruit-tastically satisfying, I actually licked my plate.

And now I’ve revealed myself as the uncouth guttersnipe that I am. So be it.

This is all cooked fruit, so it’s very soft. I could wish that the strawberries were more crisp, but they are the typical flaccid texture of most baked strawberry pies. The other fruits (blueberries, raspberries, cranberries) provide a more satisfying perkiness and chew-ability.

I personally preferred this pie served at room temperature, or chilled. But it can be served warm with ice cream, too.

I’m originally from the rural Midwest and I’ve eaten my share of fantastic homemade berry pies from my farming relatives, so it’s difficult to impress me with store bought fruit pies. However, Costco’s berry pie is definitely something I’d buy again and recommend to my friends.

Ingredients in Costco Kirkland Four Berry Pie

Impressively, there are no artificial colors or flavors. I think the only thing that could make this pie better is if it had butter in the crust instead of shortening, and no preservatives. The ingredients are relatively clean and simple:

  • Strawberries
  • Enriched flour (Wheat flour, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic acid)
  • Sugar
  • Blueberries
  • Shortening (Palm oil and Soybean oil)
  • Cranberries
  • Raspberries
  • 2% or less of: Modified corn starch, Salt, Dextrose, Preservatives (Potassium sorbate and Calcium propionate), Non-fat dry milk, Lactose, Vitamin A, Vitamin D.

Servings and Size of Kirkland Four Berry Pie

Although $19 seems like a lot of money for a pie, I weighed mine and it was a full 5 pounds, 8 ounces. A monster-sized pie! I think it would be tough to make a pie this size on your own for that price. It should serve at least 16 people. That’s $1.19 per serving. Good value, and good quality. Buy it! If it goes on sale, buy two. I don’t think you can go wrong with this one. You probably won’t hear me say that again. My snarky powers diminish with each reckless compliment. I must restrain myself, or lose my curmudgeon credibility.

The Costco item # is 1727783. This is a “Kirkland Signature” (store brand) bakery item.
