Aldi Mixed Berry Belgian Dark Chocolate (Choceur) Review

Author’s Note: These are my own snarktastic opinions. I have no affiliation with Aldi, and this is not a sponsored review.
I must fulfill my moral obligations.
One of my readers contacted me to recommend this Choceur Mixed Berry Chocolate Bar from Aldi. She even went out of her way to tell me to look for the “purple label.” At that point, I pretty much had a moral obligation to try one. Woe is me. Mine is a high and lonely destiny.
So, for the paltry sum of $1.39, I fulfilled that destiny. Here’s what I think:
There’s a strong, distinct berry smell when you break the bar open. Indeed, the smells are almost more tantalizing than the taste. I would describe this filling as a soft, sweet paste — like “buttery” icing. Surprisingly, it’s made with real freeze-dried strawberries and blueberries! In fact, you can find small fragments of the berries blended into the flirty purple filling. More about the ingredients later.

The actual chocolate is “nice.” It’s crisp, and has a moderate dark flavor, while still being candy-sweet. This is gentle chocolate — not too bitter, nor too diluted. A crowd-pleaser. While the chocolate texture is smooth and creamy, there’s only a thin shell of it wrapped around the filling.
I think it’s the right amount, however. While eating the candy bar, the flavors are balanced — neither overpowered by cocoa, nor berries. Just a harmony of the two. Overall, it was just a tad too sweet for me. But, I say that about most candy. Because I am a monster. You know.

What is Belgian Chocolate?
Here’s a mystery: the label says “Belgian Dark Chocolate” without identifying a country of origin. According to Harry & David, there are several requirements for authentic Belgian chocolate, including minimum cocoa content and pure cocoa butter in the ingredients. Technically, Belgian Chocolate is made in Belgium.
Lots of Aldi’s products are imported from Europe, but the labels identify them as such. Since this label doesn’t say this candy is imported from Belgium, I’m assuming it is a domestic (USA) product. But perhaps made with imported chocolate? I would be nice to know. Hmmph!
Here is the back of the chocolate bar, for no reason at all:

Other Choceur Chocolate Flavors
Choceur is an Aldi store brand. Here are the other flavors available from this chocolate line:
- Burnt Caramel Sea Salt
- Coconut Macaroon
- Mint Supreme
- Sea Salt
These are available at the check-out registers. Pro-tip: if you don’t see the flavor you want at your register, hop on over to the next register and snoop around — my Aldi doesn’t stock all the flavors at every register. Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Ingredients in Aldi Mixed Berry Dark Chocolate Bar
Here are the ingredients, from the label:
- Dark Chocolate (Chocolate Liquor, Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Natural Vanilla Flavor)
- White Chocolate Flavored Coating (Vegetable Oils and Fats [Fats {Palm Kernel, Palm}, Oils {Sunflower}], Sugar, Skimmed Milk Powder, Sunflower Lecithin, Natural Vanilla Flavor)
- Freeze Dried Strawberry Powder (Strawberry, Silica [Anti-Caking])
- Freeze Dried Blueberry Powder (Blueberry, Silicon Dioxide)
- Natural Strawberry Flavor
- Natural Raspberry Flavor
- Natural Blueberry Flavor
Some of the ingredients are “Rainforest Alliance Certified.” Cool, cool.
I am impressed to see the real freeze-dried strawberries and blueberries used in the filling — I was expecting a hot mess of corn syrup and fake colors. This is much more wholesome than I anticipated. Now I’ll have to find something else to complain about.
Nutrition Facts
A serving is an entire bar! Yaaaas. Thanks for giving me permission to nosh this whole thing in one sitting. There are six segments, if you’re a one-segment-per-serving kind of human. Tsk.
I will add that this is a petite bar. It’s less than 2 ounces, total. Honestly, I actually like this size. It’s less of a commitment. And, less guilt, maybe. It’s a “personal-sized” chocolate bar. Zero obligation to share it with others. Ha.
Anyway. The entire bar has 220 calories, 18 grams of fat, 3 grams of protein, and 23 grams of sugar (18 grams are “added sugars”). There’s a surprising 3 grams of fiber. You also get a whopping 20% of your daily value of iron. Popeye would approve.
Price and Servings
The entire 50 gram bar cost a frugal $1.39 at my local Aldi. The bar is divided into 6 break-off blocks, so each piece costs just 23 cents. Per ounce, it costs about 79 cents.
Shelf Life
My bar had a “best by” date of nearly 10 months after purchase.
Dramatic Conclusion
If you love berries with chocolate, this treat is for you. The flavors are bold, but not overpowering. I am thrilled by the real fruit in the filling. The price is right. I just wish the label was more transparent regarding the source of the “Belgian Chocolate.” Regardless, I look forward to trying the other flavor options for Aldi’s Choceur chocolate brand. Thanks to the lovely reader who “burdened” me with this delight.
The End.
