Aldi Moser Roth Chocolate Orange Mousse Bar Review

Author’s Note: This is a completely unbiased and unpaid review. I have no affiliation with Aldi. And I’m not a business executive. Or a gambler. Yet.
Let’s review our portfolio options.
Is this the best chocolate bar I’ve tried from Aldi? Probably. Most likely. Yes.

Very dark chocolate. Not demure. Or mindful.
This is exceedingly dark chocolate. Blackout dark. Maybe the darkest I’ve had in a candy bar. In fact, it tastes like bittersweet chocolate — barely any sweetening at all. Almost as bitter as my soul. In my world, chocolate can never be too dark. So, I adored this.
It’s a thin, crisp layer of chocolate, with what tastes like teeny-tiny bits of crunchy cocoa beans. The ingredients call this “semi-sweet chocolate,” but c’mon! There are only 9 grams of sugar per bar, which is a miniscule amount for candy.

The zesty orange filling.
However, with the sweet filling, the bitter chocolate doesn’t taste bitter at all. In fact, the syrupy orange stuff rounds this out to taste “just sweet enough.” I complain a lot about “too sweet” treats; this one is exactly as sweet as I want it.
The syrup is runnier than I expected, but in a nice way. It’s tangy, zingy, and has a strong citrus brightness. It’s made with real orange juice and orange peel. I loved this fruity, tart flavor against the earthy chocolate notes.
(Here’s another chocolate bar I raved about: Ferrero Rocher Dark Chocolate Crunchy Salted Caramel Hazelnut Bar. It’s like a very sophisticated peanut butter cup. But without peanuts.)
The seductive mousse layer.
But wait, there’s more. The orange, jam-like syrup is sitting on top a bed of airy, whipped chocolate mousse. It’s delicate, and melts on the tongue. With the other layers, the mousse doesn’t have a noticeable separate taste, but it does contribute a soft, creamy juxtaposition. A lush texture interlude. A palate buffer. It’s like the bubble-wrap padding in your Fed Ex delivery. Except, much better-tasting.

Snazzy packaging.
I like the sharp packaging here, too. You get five individually foil-wrapped mini bars inside an elegant cardboard portfolio. Did I just call this a portfolio? I did. I felt like a rich business executive, folding it open and surveying my options.
Yes, I’m weird, and I know it.

The mini bars are sub-divided as well. You get four segments per bar. This is important, because the orange syrup is so oozy, it would run everywhere if it were not compartmentalized. So, 20 segments total. I love the tidiness of this. I like boundaries, even in my chocolate.

Ingredients in Moser Roth Dark Chocolate Orange Mousse Bar from Aldi
Here is my best attempt at typing the ingredients, from the label:
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate (Chocolate, Cocoa Butter, Sugar, Cocoa Processed with Alkali, Soy Lecithin, Vanilla Powder)
- Sugar
- Chocolate
- Glucose Syrup (from Wheat or Corn)
- Butterfat
- Concentrated Orange Juice
- Contains less than 2% of: Cocoa Butter, Sorbitol Syrup (from Wheat or Corn), Orange Peels, Citric Acid, Soy Lecithin, Natural Flavors, Corn Starch, Aronia Berry Juice Concentrate (Color), Black Carrot Juice Concentrate (Color).
I love seeing the real vanilla, orange juice, orange peel, and fruit/vegetable colors. Yay. We could nit-pick over sorbitol, but on the whole, this is a pretty awesome ingredient list.
More information from the label:
- Made in Germany
- Fair Trade Cocoa

Nutrition Facts
A serving is 30 grams, or one mini-bar, or four segments! A serving contains 17o calories, 12 grams of fat, and 2 grams of protein. There are only 9 grams of sugar (impressive!!!), and 3 grams of fiber. There’s also 15% your daily value of iron per serving.
Price and Servings
The 5.3 ounce (150 gram) bar cost $2.99 at my local Aldi. Since there are 5 servings per bar, each serving is a frugal 60 cents.

Shelf Life
OK, confession time: my air conditioner is broken in my house, and it’s hot here in Florida. The label says to store this in a cool and dry place. Ha. The bar got so melty, I had no choice but to store it in the refrigerator. I’m sure that’s not necessary under normal, non-Florida, air-conditioned circumstances.
The “best by” date on mine allows approximately 8 months to consume.
Dramatic Conclusion
If this chocolate bar was a racehorse, I would gamble. If it was a stock market option, I would invest. I will buy this again. You bet.
The End.
