Ferrero Rocher Crunchy Salted Caramel Bar Review

Author’s Note: Not a paid review. I don’t do that! I have zero affiliation with Ferrero Rocher, or any of the other brands mentioned here.

Like a very sophisticated peanut butter cup.

My sister gave me this Ferrero Rocher Dark Hazelnut & Crunchy Salted Caramel Bar. So now I must review it. I must.

Actually, I would have reviewed this anyway. Because, holy smokes! This is fire.

The filling reminds me of a peanut butter cup. But a complicated peanut butter cup. A peanut butter cup with layers and layers of personality quirks. I mean that in the nicest way possible, of course.

Details on the individual segments of a Ferrero Rocher Dark Hazelnut Crunchy Caramel Chocolate Bar.

I’m a sucker for anything salty or caramel-flavored. So I loved the flavor. Natch. It reminds me of honeycomb candy. The filling is somehow both finely ground and buttery — but lightly crunchy at the same time. It has the texture of a thick nut butter, but the uber delicate crunch of crisp honeycomb and tiny hazelnut bits. The warm caramel flavor is distinct, but tempered by smooth nuttiness. Sadly, there are artificial flavors. More about the ingredients later.

(Hey, you know what else is crunchy with a caramelly-toffee flavor? This Pretzel Toffee Chocolate Bar from Tony’s Chocolonely. Read my silly review here.)

If you’ve been reading my reviews, you already know I am “Team Dark Chocolate.” This is excellent dark chocolate. In fact, it’s deeply dark, just shy of bittersweet. To me, it’s the perfect pairing with the sweet filling. Regrettably, there is butter and “butteroil” in the chocolate, which makes it a bit too melty at room temperature — at least, room temperature here in muggy Florida. I put mine in the refrigerator to crisp it up. And then it was a little too crisp. Alas.

On a sweetness scale, this bar is fairly demure. Mindful, even. I like this. I often complain about treats being too sweet. This one is perfect. It’s sweet enough to be a candy, but just barely. In fact, a serving contains just 11 grams “added sugar.” More about the Nutrition Facts later.

The bar has 15 segments. They don’t snap off cleanly, but who cares. The tops of some sections have a detailed mound of pebbles, sort of like the texture on a Ferrero Rocher bonbon ball. If you’re buying this as a foodie gift, it looks elegant and expensive. It’s sure to impress. If not, send the leftovers to me! I will dispose of them.

Here are the ingredients, from the label:

  • Sugar
  • Cocoa Mass
  • Palm Oil
  • Whey Powder
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Glucose Syrup
  • Hazelnuts
  • Butteroil
  • Milk Powder
  • Skim Milk Powder
  • Whey
  • Maltodextrin
  • Butter
  • Lecithin as an emulsifier
  • Natural & Artificial Flavors
  • Salt
  • Sodium Bicarbonate as leavening agent

Minus the artificial flavors, this is a pretty decent list. The baking soda is a surprise — I guess that’s in the crunchy caramel bits, to give them that airy lightness.

This is made in Poland. Which is interesting, since Ferrero Rocher is an Italian company.

Nutrition Facts in Ferrero Rocher Dark Hazelnut & Crunchy Caramel Chocolate Bar.

Nutrition Facts

A serving is 5 squares, and contains 170 calories. You get 2 grams of protein, 12 grams of fat (8 grams of saturated fat), 1 gram of fiber, and 14 grams of sugar. Only 11 grams are added sugars. For being a “salted” product, this is VERY low in sodium, with just 1% your daily value per serving. You also get 6% your daily iron.

Price and Servings

I didn’t buy this bar, but poking around online, the price ranges from $3.50-4.50. You can buy this at Walmart, Target, or Walgreens. Or, you can buy an 8-pack from Amazon. Because you’ll definitely want 8 of these bars!

Since there are 3 servings per 3.01 ounce bar, each 1-ounce serving costs $1.16-1.50. Pretty pricey. But worth it. I think. Yes.

Ferrero Rocher also offers these varieties of this chocolate bar:

  • White Hazelnut
  • Milk Almond
  • Milk Hazelnut
  • Dark Hazelnut

Honestly, I think Ferrero Rocher should make this candy into their signature bon-bon balls. I’d buy. For reals. Do it!

Shelf Life

The “best by” date on my bar allowed approximately 6 months to consume.

Dramatic Conclusion

This was one of the best candy bars I’ve tried recently. If you like sophisticated texture contrasts and dark chocolate, you will probably love it. If you like peanut butter cups, this will be a fun detour. This is perfect for fans of honeycomb candy. Try it, and let me know what you think.

The End.
