Sconza Yogurt Freeze Dried Berries Review

Author’s Note: Not a paid or sponsored review. These are my own silly opinions. I have no affiliation with Sconza Confections or Costco.

Blinded by the brightness

I uttered an audible “whoa!” when I popped the first nugget in my mouth. The flavor is STRONG. If you loooove tangy berry flavors, this is gonna delight you. It reminded me of eating a scoop of creamy-tart sherbet.

Triple berry

You get three different freeze-dried berries: blueberry, strawberry, and raspberry. They’re coated in a thick layer of “yogurt flavored creme.” This raised my eyebrow, but fortunately the ingredients include actual yogurt powder, skim milk powder, and whey powder. Whew. In fact, I was pretty impressed by how natural the ingredients are. More about that later.

Yogurt coating

The orbs are roughly the size of a well-fed Peanut M&M. They have a thick, heavy coating of the yogurt confection, which is moderately sweet, and very milky-flavored. It has a smooth, creamy mouthfeel, like white chocolate. But a different taste — perkier, and more nuanced. There are also speckles of ground fruit in the yogurt, which gives it a gentle color and flavor.

Crunchy contrasts

By contrast, the fruit center is super crunchy. And tangy. But not sweet. I really dig this combination. Overall, the unsweetened fruit prevents the candy from tasting cloyingly sugary. More natural. You can pretend like you are eating a handful of wholesome fruit, instead of naughty candy.

Speaking of “crunchy,” I also like that the fruit isn’t “hard.” It’s crisp, but airy. It’s easy to chew.

Fruit quality

The raspberries are my favorite flavor (the tangiest!), followed by strawberry. Unfortunately, I had far more blueberries in my bag than the other flavors. But they were still yummy. Just less tangy. If I could buy a bag of only the “red berries,” I would.

As the only criticism available, I’ll add that some of the blueberries were a bit “empty,” like the centers had vaporized in the freeze-drying process. Most of them were pretty good, though, with natural seeds and visible blueberry skins.

Condition

The nuggets vary in size, because the fruit bits vary in size. But I like this. I got a few conjoined ones. Their love was too great to be broken, so I noshed them together. United in the afterlife, I hope.

I was also pleased that the candies aren’t melty or messy. They have a tidy exterior coating that keeps them in pristine condition. Even in my warm Florida house, mine stayed neatly within their sphere. Pun intended.

Here is my best attempt at typing out the ingredients, from the label:

  • Yogurt Flavored Coating (Sugar, Palm Kernel Oil, Whey Powder, Skim Milk Powder, Yogurt Powder [Nonfat Milk, Lactic Acid], Soy Lecithin [an emulsifier], Vanilla)
  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries

  • Blueberry Powder

  • Strawberry Powder
  • Tapioca Dextrin

More information from the label:

I love seeing the real vanilla and authentic fruit powders as ingredients. I don’t love the addition of “natural flavor.” But. I won’t cry.

Price and Servings

The 18 ounce bag cost $7 at my local Costco, but it had the “asterisk of death,” (clearance/discontinued), so perhaps this is a sale price. Since there are 17 servings per bag, each serving would cost about 41 cents.

Dramatic Conclusion

I loved the rich, fruity flavors of these candies. The crunchy/smooth texture contrast is fun and unique. For a candy, the ingredients are more natural than I expected. The fruit is delicious and high quality. I would buy these again!

The illustrious Awesome-o-Meter gives these Sconza Triple Berry Yogurt Creme confections a well-deserved “Yaaas.”

The End.
