Aldi Chipotle Salmon Burgers Review

A white plate with two halves of a sandwich made with Aldi Chipotle Salmon Burger, sourdough bun, and artisan lettuce.

Author’s Note: As per always, this is an unpaid review. I have noooo affiliation with Aldi.

Won’t burn your mouth. Or your wallet.

I tried this four-pack of frozen Chipotle Salmon Burgers from Aldi’s Fremont Fish Market store brand. Here’s what I think:

I previously reviewed frozen salmon burgers from Trident Seafood, which were “meh.” By comparison, I like these Aldi renditions better. The texture is more natural, and the flavor is “tastier.” Also, after cooking, mine looked waaay better than the product picture on the box! Yikes.

Aldi’s salmon burgers come in a plastic bag, and mine were in “acceptable” condition, with some ice crystals, but no egregious freezer burns. The label gives three options for cooking (grill, oven, or pan); I opted to cook mine in a pan.

Conveniently, these cook from frozen (no thawing), and are ready in under 10 minutes. I’m using a ceramic frying pan with a little butter. Mine actually cooked slightly faster than the label recommended — 4 minutes on one side, and only 2.5 minutes on the other side gave me a deep, brown crust.

The texture of the salmon is tender, but not “hot dog” smoothness (like the Trident Burgers); it looks like finely flaked salmon. But not blended into mush. There’s a natural, but not offensive, fresh fishy aroma that I enjoyed.

(If turkey burgers are more your jam, here’s my review of Columbus frozen Turkey Burgers from Costco.)

The burgers hold together adequately, and they are very moist — even juicy — inside. Juicer than a Hollywood gossip column.

The “chipotle” flavor is a bit… weak. It’s a nice flavor, but not the zesty spice-fest I was hoping for. If you are sensitive to spicy foods, this shouldn’t be an issue. I got more spicy satisfaction from the Famous Dave’s Sweet n Spicy Pickle Chips I added to my burger. And some spicy Burman’s mustard (from Aldi). I also salted my burger a bit, because that’s what I do. Always.

I ate my salmon burger on a Power Grains Sourdough bun from Aldi. I swear, I don’t work for Aldi! If I had this to do over, I would definitely pick a lighter bun — this one was sooooo hearty and thicccc, it overpowered the already delicate flavors of the burger. Too much bread! A little “Artisan” lettuce (also from Aldi) gave the fragile illusion that I was eating healthy. Ha.

I do wish the label expounded on how many Omega-3’s are in each serving. If you’re curious about Keta Salmon, I wrote a review of this frozen Orca Bay Keta Salmon here, where I compared it to other salmon varieties. Spoiler alert: it’s considered a cheaper, less desirable salmon by many people. But it’s still nutritious and delicious.

Nutrition Facts in Wild Caught Alaskan Frozen Chipotle Salmon Burgers from Aldi.

Nutrition Facts

A serving is one burger. Duh. A 2.8 ounce patty contains 150 calories, 9 grams of fat, and 15 grams of protein. Zero grams fiber and sugar. Only 1 gram carbs! Whoo! Lonely little carb. There’s a modest 13% of your daily value of sodium per burger.

Price and Servings

The four-pack of frozen salmon burgers cost $5.99 at my local Aldi. Per burger, that is $1.50, which is cheaper than Trident’s frozen salmon burgers ($1.83 each). I like that I can buy a smaller package, too. (Trident’s come in a 12-pack for $22). However, Aldi’s are smaller burgers (2.8 ounces compared to Trident’s 4 ounces) and contain less protein (15 grams compared to 20). So, not a true savings, in the end.

Shelf Life

The “best by” date on my box allowed almost 2 years to consume. Whoop.

Cooking Instructions

Here are the official cooking options, from the label:

Notably, microwaving isn’t recommended. Also, don’t boil ’em, mash ’em, or stick ’em in a stew.

Dramatic Conclusion

Aldi’s frozen chipotle salmon burgers are quick and easy to prepare, have a great texture, and are fairly priced. The flavors are less exciting than I’d hoped, but still good. Spice-sensitive folks can eat these without burning their mouths. Or wallets.

The End.
