Flora Lemon Creme Wafers Review

A small white plate with three stacked layers of Flora Italian Lemon Creme Wafers.

Author’s note: As always, this is NOT a paid or sponsored review. I have no affiliation with either Flora Foods or Publix. These are my own derpy opinions.

Mind is officially bent.

You’ve had wafer cremes. But have you had LEMON wafer cremes? I opened the package last night expecting to eat “one or two.” But immediately gobbled six. I had to give myself a stern lecture to prevent the whole package from disappearing.

These little dudes are bursting with flavor. My mind is officially bent. I sat at my kitchen table mumbling “whoa” over and over again. Seriously scrumdeliumptious.

I think it’s the real lemon juice powder. It’s a strong, zingy, citrus kick. A shout of lemon. The aggressiveness shocked me. But it was a great compliment to the soft, lush icing. These guys aren’t for lemon haters!

There are also “natural flavors.” And some real vanilla bean. Plus just a touch of delicate, milky flavor from the skim milk powder and whey powder. But mostly it screams “lemon.”

(Definitely a completely different experience than the Lemon Danish Puff Cookies from Karens Bakery, which had whisper-light flavor.)

Speaking of that creamy filling, it’s such a thin smear. But somehow exactly right. Like the Italian Loacker Wafers I previously reviewed, Flora’s filling is made with coconut oil. My favorite! Since my Florida home is pretty warm right now, the filling is slippery and near-molten. At cooler temps it becomes more of a thick paste. Either way, it’s fairly sweet icing. A little goes a long way.

(For another creamy lemon treat, check out my review of Costco’s Lemon Custard Pie.)

The actual wafers are a barely-there gossamer crunch. Probably the most delicate wafer I’ve tried to date. As expected, they have almost no flavor or sweetness of their own. They’re just a vehicle for the vibrant filling. I appreciate how fresh and crisp the wafers are. I also had almost zero breakage. You guys are heroes.

This is a small package. But since the crisp wafers get stale almost immediately, I don’t mind. I’d rather buy several smaller packages than one big bundle.

This is the kind of product I love to keep on hand for unexpected entertaining. It’s the perfect dainty bite to serve with tea or coffee. A classy little treat that won’t break the budget. Like the Sprouts Lemon Cake Bites, these would be a bright, festive addition to a summer tea party or garden party.

Flora has a few other flavors of these wafers, including: Chocolate, Hazelnut, Vanilla, and Strawberry. I bought all of them except the Strawberry, which I could not find at my local Publix. Alas.

I don’t know why I want this, but I do: I want a creme wafer with TWO flavors. One layer of each flavor. Like, Lemon & Vanilla. Or Strawberry & Chocolate. I’ve never seen this on a shelf. Why isn’t this a thing? Make it so.

I’d also really dig a coffee flavor or even peanut butter flavor version. Or (don’t judge me): pumpkin spice. I would buy. I think we haven’t explored enough flavor options.

Ingredients in Flora Lemon Creme Wafers

Ingredients in Flora Italian Lemon Wafers.

Here are the ingredients from the label:

  • Wheat Flour
  • Highly Refined Coconut Oil
  • Glucose Syrup
  • Sugar
  • Skim Milk Powder
  • Dextrose
  • Whey Powder
  • Lemon Juice Powder
  • Barley Malt Extract
  • Soy Lecithin
  • Natural Flavors
  • Leavening (Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate)
  • Salt
  • Hazelnuts
  • Vanilla Bean

Glucose syrup and dextrose are not my favorites. I could do without the added “natural flavors.” But otherwise, this is a pretty decent list. These wafers are made in Italy.

Nutrition Facts

Nutrition Facts in Flora Italian Lemon Cream Wafer Cookies.

A serving is 4 wafers and contains 150 calories. You get 7 grams of fat (all of them are saturated fat) and 2 grams of protein. There are 20 grams total carbohydrates, of which 12 grams are sugars (10 grams “added sugar”) and less than 1 gram is fiber. There’s just 2% your daily value sodium, and 0% your daily value cholesterol per serving.

Price and Servings

There are only 5 servings per package. Fortunately, each 5.3 ounce package only costs $1.69 at my local Publix. So each 30 gram serving cost me 34 cents. They’re slightly cheaper at Walmart. Or you can buy them directly from the Flora website.

Shelf Life

Happily, these have a reasonable shelf life. Mine “expired” about 1 year after purchase.

Dramatic Conclusion

A hand-drawn diagram of an "awesome-o-meter" measuring from "Never Again" to "Speechless." The arrow is pointing to "Speechless."

Lemon flavor is a fabulous discovery. This is the perfect bright little pick-me-up. I appreciate the “fairly natural” ingredients, and the supreme freshness. I will absolutely be buying more of these!

The Awesome-o-Meter rates these Flora Lemon Creme Wafers a rare “Speechless.”

The End.
